If you are frightened
Something brought you to this page, and it may be that you are not reading out of curiosity tonight.
If so — slow down for a moment. You are not foolish, you are not losing your mind, and you are not beyond help. Read this at whatever pace you need.
First, the plain things
Most of what frightens people at night has an ordinary cause. Exhaustion, grief, sleep paralysis, carbon monoxide, an old house, a medication recently changed, a mind that has been under too much for too long. None of that is a dismissal, and none of it means you imagined anything. It means the first questions worth asking are the checkable ones. Have you slept. Have you eaten. Has anything changed in the last month.
If it is a house — get a carbon monoxide detector. That is not a joke, and it is a genuine cause of fear, dread and figures seen at the edge of vision.
If you are in danger
If you are being hurt, or you are thinking about hurting yourself, this website is the wrong thing to be reading right now.
Contact your local emergency services. In the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Please do that first, and come back to us later. We will still be here.
Find a person, not a page
The most useful thing we can tell you is to talk to somebody who can be in the room with you.
A pastor at a nearby church is a good place to start, and you do not need to have been a member, or to have been in a church at all. You can say plainly that something has frightened you and you would like to talk to someone. That is a normal request, and a decent church will take it seriously.
If you do not know where to begin, a doctor is also a good beginning, and there is no shame in it.
What we can tell you
We are not going to pretend to know what happened to you. We were not there, and we will not manufacture a certainty in order to sound comforting.
But we can tell you the thing this whole site is built on. Scripture does not treat the unseen as something greater than the God who made it. It says the opposite — that all things were created by Him and for Him, the visible and the invisible, thrones and dominions and principalities and powers alike. Nothing you are afraid of is outside of that.
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.”
Colossians 1:16 · KJV
“The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
John 1:5 · KJV
You do not have to be certain of any of that tonight. We only want you to know that the fear is not the last word, and that people have stood where you are standing and come out the other side of it.
One more time, so it is clear
We are a publication. We are not counselors, we are not a deliverance ministry, and we are not a crisis service. We cannot take your case, and we will not pretend we can.
What we can do is refuse to frighten you for attention. We do not trade in fear here. Whatever else you find on this site, it will not be that.
You are not alone in the dark, and you are not the first person to be here.
